Traveling Exhaust Systems

Traveling exhaust systems provide effective pollution control for moving in-plant emission sources, such as those associated with overhead cranes.  Instead of ventilating an entire building, these systems use a close-capture approach, which requires less exhaust volume and significantly reduces capital and energy costs.

How Traveling Exhaust Systems Work

A traveling exhaust system is installed along a crane runway or monorail track.  An exhaust trolley, which is connected to a capture hood, moves with the overhead crane or monorail trolley.  As it travels, the trolley opens a flexible seal to provide suction, allowing gases and other emissions to be captured by the hood and directed into the exhaust duct.  This system is designed to maintain a consistent vacuum, with minimal air transfer losses.

This unique design allows the fume collection hood to follow any emission source automatically.  The flexible connection between the hood and the trolley provides a large amount of movement latitude without distorting the seals on the exhaust duct.

Key Features and Applications

These systems offer high flexibility and versatility, making them ideal for handling a variety of airborne pollutants.

Benefits:

  • Cost Savings: Dramatically reduces exhaust air volumes, saving money on air handling equipment, dust collectors, and duct sizing.
  • Reduced Operating Costs: Substantially cuts energy costs, as well as expenses for make-up air and waste heat.
  • Improved Work Environment: Prevents high volumes of contaminants from spreading into the workplace, ensuring total emission control at the source.

Typical Applications:

  • Overhead crane exhaust for furnace charging and tapping.
  • Tripper conveyors, traveling hoppers, and scale cars.
  • Teeming leaded steel.
  • Grinding operations.
  • Coke oven quench car.
  • Open furnace hoods.

Our engineers can configure the system to suit your specific application, considering factors such as gas temperature, corrosion characteristics, radiant heat, and hood travel speed. Feel free to contact us to discuss how we can assist you with your traveling exhaust system needs.
